Sam Leever was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game at West Side Park as the Pittsburg Pirates beat the ice-cold Chicago
Orphans by the count of 8 to 1.

Pittsburg took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring a single run.
Pittsburg managed 11 in their victory.

The victory went to Leever(5-4) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Rube
Waddell(4-6) absorbed the loss. He allowed 11 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.

Patsy Donovan had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Jack Harper pitched a complete
game as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 5
to 2 at League Park.

Cincinnati was unable to claim the lead after St. Louis went ahead in the top
of the 5th inning plating an isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. After an
out was recorded, Jesse Burkett slapped a one-base hit. Emmett Heidrick came
next and he lined a base-hit. Dan McGann then banged out a single scoring
the run. St. Louis had a total of 12 hits for the game.

Harper(6-2) allowed 2 runs on the game. Noodles Hahn(5-5) was given the loss.
He was hit hard and gave up 12 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.

McAllister's blast leads Tigers to Sunday victory

Sport McAllister (pictured) hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam, in the Tigers 5-run 5th inning. Heading into the home half of the 5th, the Tigers trailed 6-4, and after Sport's blast they never trailed again. Emil Frisk (5-2) went the distance for the Tigers, despite allowing 14 hits. With the victory, Detroit stays within a game and a half of the first place Americans. The Athletics have dropped to 16-16 and are 5.5 games off the pace.

Emil Frisk allowed George Stallings to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete

game and third baseman Sport McAllister blasted a grand slam as the Detroit

Tigers defeated the PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS by a score of 15 to 6 at Bennett

Park.



McAllister helped send the fans home happy. He delivered a single in the 4th

inning, hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates (his 1st of the

season) in the 5th inning and stroked a one-base hit resulting in a run in

the 8th inning. Detroit bats were very productive in the 1st inning when

they had 4 runs on 3 hits, the 5th inning when they had 5 runs on 3 hits and

the 6th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits. Detroit had 16 hits

for the afternoon.



The win was credited to Frisk(5-2) who went the whole way allowing 6 runs.

Bill Bernhard(3-3) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 2 walks

in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Cy Young went the distance and center fielder Chick Stahl collected 2
extra-base hits and had 3 RBI at Lloyd Street Grounds where the Boston
Americans beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8 to 2.

Boston took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning plating an isolated
run. Freddy Parent doubled. After another out, Ossee Schreckengost came to
the plate and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. Boston rapped out 14 hits
for the afternoon.

The win was credited to Young(7-2) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs.
Bill Reidy(3-4) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 9 innings allowing 14
hits and 1 walk.

Clark Griffith allowed Griffith to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
at South Side Park as the Chicago White Sox beat the Washington Senators by
the count of 9 to 3.

Griffith(5-2) gave Chicago a solid outing. He was reached for 7 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. Chicago managed 15 in their victory.

Watty Lee(4-4) was tagged with the loss. He was touched for 15 hits and 3
walks in 8 innings.

Deacon's clutch single in 6th puts Brooklyn up for good

Deacon McGuire (pictured) capped a 3-run 6th inning rally for Brooklyn, by roping a single to right that plated the go ahead run. The Superbas had just given up the lead in the home 5th on a 2-run single by Jimmy Slagle. After Deacon's hit put the Superbas on top, Joe Kelley doubled home some insurance in the 8th and the Brooklyn club went on to win by a count of 10-6. Brooklyn continues to sit atop the National League with a 22-8 record, while the Phillies fall to 19-12, 3.5 games off the pace.

Kid Nichols pitched a complete game as the Boston Beaneaters smashed the
overmatched New York Giants, 15 to 2.

Nichols(4-3) gave Boston a solid outing. He surrendered 10 hits and 4 walks
in 9 innings. Boston bats were very productive in the 8th inning which saw
them plate 10 runs on 8 hits. Boston finished with 12 hits in the victory.

Christy Mathewson(6-4) was tagged with the loss. Boston scored big getting 10

Jesse Tannehill allowed Fred Clarke to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game at Exposition Park where the Pittsburg Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds
in 10 innings 4 to 3.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Pittsburg won the hard fought contest in
the 10th inning. Tannehill lined a single. Ginger Beaumont came next and he
ripped a base-knock. Clarke then worked the squeeze play to perfection
resulting in a mighty exciting win for Pittsburg and the 9,315 home town fans
in attendance. Both teams totaled 10 on the afternoon.

The win went to Tannehill(6-0) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Doc Newton(1-7)
was given the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 1 walk in 9 and 1/3 innings.

Jesse Burkett had 5 hits and scored 3 times at West Side Park as the St. Louis
Cardinals came back dramatically to top the Chicago Orphans by the score of
11 to 8.

St. Louis had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 4 runners
on 6 hits. St. Louis kept the scorekeepers busy in the 9th inning when they
had 4 runs on 6 hits. St. Louis finished with 23 hits while Chicago ended up
with 16.

Willie Sudhoff(5-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and
allowing 8 runs. Ed Murphy got the save, his 1st. Jack Taylor(2-6) was the
losing pitcher. He was touched for 22 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

Patsy Donovan was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'

Beck's rbi caps Blues comeback win


Erve Beck (pictured) was the hero as the Blues rallied in the 9th to beat the Athletics 4-3. Beck didn't even have to hit safely to provide the decisive run. He rolled a pitch to deep short that allowed Bob Wood to scamper home ahead of the tag. Philadelphia had taken the lead in the visitor's 9th on a 2-run triple by Lave Cross. The loss ended the Athletics modest 3-game winning streak.

Bill Hoffer allowed Jimmy McAleer to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game

as the Cleveland Blues rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over

PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS, 4 to 3.



Cleveland scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3

runs using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Candy Lachance keyed the rally

when he delivered a one-base hit. Bill Bradley stepped up to the plate and

he slapped a base-hit. Bob Wood then reached on an error bringing in a run.

Frank Scheibeck followed and he hit a single, and an error was also

committed, driving in one more runner. Erve Beck stepped into the box and

would hit into a fielders choice making Cleveland the winners and sending the

2,617 fans home happy. Cleveland managed 7 in their victory.



The winning pitcher was Hoffer(5-2) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Wiley

Piatt(2-7) suffered the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 7 hits in 8 and 1/3

innings.



'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Hoffer, 'I got burned on

a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

the Baltimore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to
1.

Baltimore brought 4 runs across the plate in the 5th inning. The critical
plate appearance was by Jimmy Williams who silenced the crowd when he emptied
the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season). Baltimore and
Detroit each finished the afternoon with 8 hits.

McGinnity(5-6) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Roscoe
Miller(4-2) was the loser. He pitched 9 innings and surrendered 8 hits and 4

Erwin Harvey allowed Clark Griffith to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game and he had 2 base hits as the Chicago White Sox won in dramatic fashion
over the Boston Americans by a score of 5 to 4 at South Side Park.

Chicago came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Frank Shugart opened up the inning
nicely when he stroked a one-base hit. Two outs later Billy Sullivan came to
the plate and drew a walk. Harvey then doubled resulting in a run. Dummy
Hoy stepped in and he drew a walk. Fielder Jones stepped into the box and
slapped a single giving Chicago the win much to the delight of the home town
crowd. Chicago had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Harvey(1-3), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Fred
Mitchell(1-1) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 5 walks
in 8 and 2/3 innings.

hit. Two outs later Billy Clingman stepped in and he banged out a single
scoring the run. Washington rapped out 12 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Gear(1-3) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. Ned
Garvin(1-5) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 3
walks in 9 innings.

With this win, Washington has a 12-14 record. They have been 6-4 lately.
With this loss, Milwaukee has a 3-7 record of late, 10-21, worst in the
league overall.
