Transactions: Steelman released

Superbas release 25-year old catcher the day after his first hit in a Brooklyn uniform
Fresh off a 12-11 win, where Steelman went 1-4 with a walk, the Superbas released the young catcher. Steelman was 1 for 8 in his brief Brooklyn career (includes an 0-4 performance in 1900). With Duke Farrell and Deacon McGuire already on the roster, Steelman wasn't expected to get a lot of playing time.

Pitching matchups for 4-23-01

The 1-0 Pirates hopped the train to St. Louis and will take on the Cardinals. The Bucs send their young lefthander, Rube Waddell out for their 2nd game of the season. Waddell had a lovely 2.37 ERA in 1900, but his 8-13 record belies his lack of offensive support. The 23-year old Jack Harper opposes Waddell. Harper made only one appearance last season and it wasn't a memorable one. He took the loss in a three inning start and allowed four hits and two walks. St. Louis is counting on Harper to mature into the big time pitcher they need.

The 1-0 Beaneaters will be playing in Philadelphia versus the 0-3 Phillies. Vic Willis gets the call for Boston. Willis previously had won 25 and 27 games before the 1900 season that saw him struggle with a 10-17 record and a 4.19 ERA. He'll be opposed by Al Orth. Orth, the 28-year old righty, carries a career mark of 80-60 into the 1901 season. He's coming off a mediocre 1900 campaign where he managed a 14-14 record with a rather pedestrian 3.78 ERA. The Phils have had to rely on relief pitchers in two of their first three games and are hoping for a lengthy performance from Orth.

April 22nd

An offensive showcase over the first four innings. Neither starter would manage to get out of the fourth and the game would be turned over to the bullpen. Both relief pitchers did quite well and kept each side in check. Tom Daly got a sac fly in the 9th to push across the lead run for Brooklyn. Phillies had the bottom of their order up, and could do nothing with Kennedy and the Superbas move to 3-0 on the season.

It was an exciting day game in Baker Bowl where the Brooklyn Superbas finally
out-lasted the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 12 to 11 in a affair.

The game was decided in the 9th inning. Jimmy Sheckard laced a one-base hit.
Joe Kelley got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Tom McCreery
then drew a walk. Sheckard proceeded to steal third base. Tom Daly came to
the plate and hit a deep fly scoring the run. Brooklyn bats were very
productive in the 2nd inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the
4th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 6 hits. Philadelphia proved to be
no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

The win went to Brickyard Kennedy(2-0) who allowed no runs in 6 innings. Bill
Duggleby(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 9 hits and 1 walk
in 6 innings.

Pitching matchup 4-22-01

Brooklyn visits Philly in the only matchup of April 22nd. The Phillies are looking to avert an 0-3 start to the season. 31-year old righthander, Frank Kitson takes the hill for the Superbas. Frank is coming off a year of mixed results. He had a respectable 15-13 record in 1900, but his ERA jumped up to 4.19. He'll be opposed by 22-year old lefthander, Doc White, who will be making his professional debut.

April 21st

Oprhans committed four of their game total six errors in the 7th inning that allowed the Cardinals to plate four. Sudhoff did a nice job in salvaging the finale for St. Louis. Frank Chance got the start behind the plate for the Orphans, and the Cardinals ran wild on him throughout.

Willie Sudhoff was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and Patsy Donovan had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Robison Field as
the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Orphans 5 to 1.

St. Louis scored 4 runs in the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits. They
would hold up as the winning runs. St. Louis finished with 11 hits in the
victory.

Sudhoff(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Jock Menefee(0-1) was
tagged with the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 11 hits and 1 walk.

Pitching matchup for 4-21-01

In the series finale between Chicago and St. Louis, Jock Menefee will oppose Willie Sudhoff. The 33-year old Menefee is coming off a respectable 1900 campaign where he won 9 and lost 4 with an ERA of 3.85. In his past, Menefee has played some outfield, and even though he didn't get the opportunity last season, the Orphans have stated that he may see some time there this year. Sudhoff, 26 years old, is coming off his first full season with St. Louis. He sported a nice 2.76 ERA but only had a 6-8 record to show for it. He's trying to prevent the Orphans from sweeping this opening series.

April 20th

Pirates had to call on Jack Chesbro in the 9th to nail this one down. Reds had loaded the bases, and one already in. Chesbro got a DP ball to effectively end the rally and get the save. Hahn didn't have it in the middle innings as his opponent Leever even had 3 hits and 3 ribbies.

Pitching matchups for April 20, 1901

The 29 year old Leever, is looking to follow up his respectable 1900 season where he went 15-13 and a 2.71 ERA. He takes on Frank "Noodles" Hahn for the Reds. Hahn, a mere 20 years old and only a few days shy of his birthday, gets the opening day nod for Cincy. Hahn was 16-20 with a 3.27 ERA in his sophomore season of 1900.

Orphans send 22 year old, "Long" Tom Hughes to the mound today. Hughes will be making only his 4th National League start, as he was 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA in 3 starts in 1900. He'll be matched up against Albert "Cowboy" Jones for the Cardinals. Jones had his most effective season to date in 1900, compiling a 13-19 record with a 3.57 ERA.

in the 9th but their rally came up short.
