Pitching matchups for 4-23-01

The 1-0 Pirates hopped the train to St. Louis and will take on the Cardinals. The Bucs send their young lefthander, Rube Waddell out for their 2nd game of the season. Waddell had a lovely 2.37 ERA in 1900, but his 8-13 record belies his lack of offensive support. The 23-year old Jack Harper opposes Waddell. Harper made only one appearance last season and it wasn't a memorable one. He took the loss in a three inning start and allowed four hits and two walks. St. Louis is counting on Harper to mature into the big time pitcher they need.

The 1-0 Beaneaters will be playing in Philadelphia versus the 0-3 Phillies. Vic Willis gets the call for Boston. Willis previously had won 25 and 27 games before the 1900 season that saw him struggle with a 10-17 record and a 4.19 ERA. He'll be opposed by Al Orth. Orth, the 28-year old righty, carries a career mark of 80-60 into the 1901 season. He's coming off a mediocre 1900 campaign where he managed a 14-14 record with a rather pedestrian 3.78 ERA. The Phils have had to rely on relief pitchers in two of their first three games and are hoping for a lengthy performance from Orth.
