Beaumont's bunt single leads Pirates to sweep

Ginger Beaumont (pictured) laid down a beauty of a bunt in the 12th inning, that brought in the lead run for the Pirates. Fred Clarke singled in another to follow and the Pirates got the 3-1 win and the doubleheader sweep over Brooklyn. Both starting pitchers were brilliant, carrying a scoreless duel into the 8th inning, but only Leever would figure in the final decision.

In a close game it was the Pittsburg Pirates 3, the BROOKLYN SUPERBAS 1 in 12

innings at Washington Park.



Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Pittsburg

pulled the game out in the 12th inning. Jack O'Connor led off the inning for

Pittsburg when he reached on an error. Jiggs Donahue followed and he slapped

a one-base hit. Donahue then stole second base. Ginger Beaumont stepped in

and he laced a base-knock resulting in a run. Fred Clarke came to the plate

and laced a base-hit, and an error was also committed, scoring the final run

of the inning. The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning.



The winning pitcher was Sam Leever(4-4) who allowed 1 run in 11 innings. Jack

Chesbro earned his 2nd save. Doc McJames(2-2) was the losing pitcher in

relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 3 hits and no walks.

Tannehill keeps perfect record in DH opener

Jesse Tannehill (pictured) ran his record to a perfect 5-0 with a 10-5 win in the opener of today's Memorial Day doubleheader. Tannehill not only threw a complete game, but he contributed three hits and three runs batted in on offense. He drove in two with a double in the Pirates monster 7-run 4th inning and added another rbi on a single in the 7th inning.

game and he collected 2 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI at Washington Park

where the Pittsburg Pirates beat the BROOKLYN SUPERBAS by the score of 10 to

5.



Pittsburg had 7 runs cross the plate in the top of the 3rd inning when they

had 6 base hits. That early scoring was all that Tannehill(5-0) needed.

Pittsburg had a total of 13 hits for the game.



Jim Hughes(3-2) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 4

walks in 7 innings.

Bill Dinneen came through with a solid 9 innings at South End Grounds where
the Boston Beaneaters beat the Chicago Orphans 5 to 1.

Dinneen(4-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Chicago batters. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings
reducing his ERA from 4.68 to 4.12. Boston banged out 9 on the afternoon.

Rube Waddell(4-5) was the loser. He surrendered 5 runs and 9 hits in 8
innings.

Togie Pittinger tossed a complete game as the Boston Beaneaters outscored the
Chicago Orphans 5 to 4.

Pittinger(1-4) pitched a fine game. He went 9 innings surrendering 7 hits and
4 walks. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.

The loss was charged to Jock Menefee(2-5). He gave up 5 runs and 9 hits in 8
innings.

Elmer Flick had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings 8 to 7 at Baker Bowl.

Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia won
the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. Ed Delahanty laced a one-base
hit. Flick was next and he doubled making Philadelphia the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration. Philadelphia had 14 hits for the
afternoon.

Red Donahue(5-3) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Doc Newton(1-6)
ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 14 hits and 3 walks in
10 innings.

With this win, Philadelphia has a 18-11 record. They have been 6-4 lately.
Bid McPhee was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep
losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

Elmer Flick had 2 base hits at Baker Bowl where the Philadelphia Phillies beat
the Cincinnati Reds in 12 innings by the score of 5 to 4.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Philadelphia was
victorious in the 12th inning. Flick lined a one-base hit. Harry Wolverton
stepped up to the plate and he doubled resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Philadelphia and the 3,079 home town fans in attendance. Cincinnati had 15
hits in the game while Philadelphia had 12, but Philadelphia had the more
timely hits.

The win went to Bill Duggleby(6-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Amos
Rusie(0-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and no
walks without retiring a batter.

Jack Harper tossed a complete game and left fielder Jesse Burkett had 3 base
hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Giants by a score
of 5 to 3.

St. Louis won the game with a rally in the top of the 8th inning with 2 runs
using 3 hits. Otto Krueger started the inning off right when he doubled.
Two outs later Burkett came up and he hit a single knocking in a run. Emmett
Heidrick then tripled scoring the final run of the inning. New York
threatened in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put down the rally.

The win went to Harper(5-2) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Bill Phyle(1-3)
absorbed the loss. He was knocked around by St. Louis, allowing 13 hits and
4 walks in 9 innings.

Roger Denzer(2-0) struggled at times, but was good enough to get the victory.
He gave up 16 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. The game was a wild affair with
the lead changing hands 5 times.

Ed Doheny got the save, his 1st. Jack Powell(3-4) was given the loss. He
allowed 12 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. 'I just wanted to give my team a
chance to win.' said Denzer, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won
the game, and that's all that matters.'

Lajoie leads 23 hit outburst as Athletics sweep Blues

In the 2nd game of today's doubleheader, Nap Lajoie (pictured) had 4 hits and 4 rbi's in the Philadelphia 17-10 win. Offense was the name of the game today, as Nap had three doubles (giving him 8 on the season), and got three hits from four additional players. Bill Bernhard, hardly sharp himself, got the win for Philly to run his record to 3-2.

Cleveland led 1-0 in the 3rd when the Athletics exploded for six runs. The inning was highlighted by Harry Davis (pictured) 2-run double, his third two-bagger of the season. Eddie Plank received all the help he would need in that inning, as he settled in and allowed only one more run to the Blues offense. Philadelphia scraps back to .500 with the win, while the Blues drop to 12-16.

Boston went ahead for good in the 7th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4
hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Buck Freeman who helped quiet
the crowd when he lined a one-base hit which was good for two runs. Chicago
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.

Beville(2-0) allowed 8 runs on the game. John Katoll(6-2) was given the loss
in relief. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 2 innings.

'We won because we did the little things right.' Jimmy Collins said after the

The Chicago Orphans have signed catcher Mike Kahoe. Kahoe had previously played this season with the Reds. With Cincinnati he had two hits in twelve at bats. Kahoe is expected to provide some relief for Orphans starting catcher Johnny Kling.

Bill Reidy (pictured) absolutely dominated the Athletics offense in this contest. Reidy allowed only three hits and one walk in the 10-0 Brewers win. Brooklyn rallies behind Sheckard for win
Jimmy Sheckard (pictured) had three hits and scored three times as the Superbas rallied from an early deficit to beat pre-season favorite Pirates 9-3. Honus Wagner was red hot early smacking a solo home run and driving in another run with a base hit. But Snake Wiltse folded in the 7th inning as Brooklyn strung together some hits from the top of their order to pull away.

to 4.09. The left-handed Hahn lost his no-hit bid when Harry Wolverton
singled with two outs in the 7th inning. Neither team managed to score after
the 3rd inning.

to put down the rally.

The win went to Powell(3-3) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Christy
Mathewson(6-3) was the loser. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you
just get lucky,' Powell said, 'this was one of those times.'

Fultz drives in game winner as Athletics dance with .500 mark

Dave Fultz (pictured) singled in the go ahead run in the Philadelphia 6th and later stole 2nd and scored an insurance run, in the Athletics 5-2 victory. Philadelphia continues to dance back and forth around the .500 mark, and now sit evenly atop it at 13-13. Chick Fraser got the win, completing all nine innings. Fraser scattered 8 hits, 4 walks and overcame two of his own errors to notch the victory.

Lave Cross had 3 base hits and Chick Fraser allowed Connie Mack to rest his

bullpen, tossing a complete game as the PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS topped the

Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 5 to 2 at Lloyd Street Grounds.



PHILADELPHIA brought 2 runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning.

PHILADELPHIA took care of Milwaukee with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Frank Isbell had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and John Skopec tossed a complete game
as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 8 to
1 at South Side Park.

Chicago jumped out to the early lead in the first inning with 2 runs on 3
hits. After an out was recorded, Fielder Jones began the rally when he drew
a walk. Sam Mertes came next and he stroked a single. Isbell then stroked a
one-base hit scoring a run. Fred Hartman got his chance to keep things
going, but he went down on strikes. Frank Shugart stepped into the box and
laced a base-knock to load the bases. Herm McFarland kept things alive and
reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning. That was all the
offense they were to need. Offensively, Chicago was a juggernaut. They
scored in 6 separate innings.

Skopec(2-6) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Joe McGinnity(4-5)
was given the loss. He was touched for 13 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

It was an exciting day game in South Side Park where the Baltimore Orioles
finally out-lasted the Chicago White Sox by a score of 12 to 10 in a
affair.

Baltimore scored 4 runs in the 7th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided by
Frank Foutz who quieted the home crowd when he emptied the bases with a Grand
Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season). The Baltimore offense man-handled the
Chicago pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings.

Jack Dunn(2-1) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 10 runs for the victory. Bill
Karns got the save, his 1st. Roy Patterson(2-4) was the losing pitcher. His
ERA increased from 4.56 to 5.00 as he allowed 10 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Second baseman Kid Gleason connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI and Roscoe
Miller came through with a solid 9 innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the
Washington Senators by a score of 9 to 0.

Miller(4-1) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Washington
hitters. He surrendered only 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA
to 2.20. Detroit finished with 12 hits in the victory.

Bill Carrick(2-4) took the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 6 walks in 8 innings.
'Miller pitched a gem of a game', Jim Manning recounted. 'He kept our
batters off balance the entire game.'

Conroy hits two blasts in Brewers romp

Wid Conroy (pictured) went deep twice as the Brewers blew out Eddie Plank and the Athletics. He hit one of his home runs in the Brewers huge 7 run sixth inning, and later in the inning singled in two more runs. His other shot came in the 8th off Billy Milligan who had relieved Plank. Athletics drop back below .500 with the loss.

Wid Conroy blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Tully Sparks tossed a complete

game at Lloyd Street Grounds as the Milwaukee Brewers belted the PHILADELPHIA

ATHLETICS by the count of 12 to 2.



Conroy provided much of the offense. He cracked a solo homerun in the 6th

inning, lashed a single bringing in two baserunners in the 6th inning and

lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning.

Milwaukee rapped out 17 hits for the afternoon.



Sparks(2-1) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. The losing

pitcher was Eddie Plank(1-1). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving

up 14 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.



With this win, Milwaukee has a 9-17 record. They have been 5-5 lately.

PHILADELPHIA has a record of 12-13 after the loss.
