Pittsburgh and Cincinnati finally play their opening game. Sam Leever will take the hill for Pittsburgh. The 29 year old Leever, is looking to follow up his respectable 1900 season where he went 15-13 and a 2.71 ERA. He takes on Frank "Noodles" Hahn for the Reds. Hahn, a mere 20 years old and only a few days shy of his birthday, gets the opening day nod for Cincy. Hahn was 16-20 with a 3.27 ERA in his sophomore season of 1900.

Orphans send 22 year old, "Long" Tom Hughes to the mound today. Hughes will be making only his 4th National League start, as he was 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA in 3 starts in 1900. He'll be matched up against Albert "Cowboy" Jones for the Cardinals. Jones had his most effective season to date in 1900, compiling a 13-19 record with a 3.57 ERA.
