April 24th

Cardinals manager Patsy Donovan threw a changeup before the game even started. Jack Powell got pushed back, and Cowboy Jones got the start. Patsy may have wished to go with his initial plan. Jones struggled, including giving up HR's to Wagner and Clarke as Pittsburg won going away.

Deacon Phillippe tossed a complete game as the Pittsburg Pirates defeated the
St. Louis Cardinals 9 to 2 at Robison Field.
 
Pittsburg took the lead off Cowboy Jones in the first inning as they scored 2
runs on 3 base hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Honus Wagner
who silenced the stadium when he blasted a two-run home run (his 1st of the
season).  Pittsburg had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in
6 separate innings.  
 
Phillippe(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Jones(0-2)
was given the loss.  He allowed 7 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings.

AL Pitching Matchups for Opening Day, 4-24-01

The fledgling American League will begin play in Chicago on this day. The Cleveland Blues will open their season with Bill Hoffer on the mound. Hoffer didn't pitch in any professional capacity during the 1900 season. Hoffer, who turned 30 this past November, was quite successful for the Baltimore Orioles of the mid 1890's, notching some 78 victories over three plus seasons. His most recent twirling was done on behalf of the Pittsburg club in 1899, where he compiled an 8-10 record with a 3.63 ERA. The White Sox will send a 24-year old rookie, Roy Patterson, to the mound in their inaugural affair. Patterson is a native of Stoddard, Wisconsin and is thought to be importance to the Chicago clubs success in the 1901 season.

NL Pitching Matchups for 4-24-01

Pittsburg will send Deacon Phillippe to the mound as they try and improve their early season 1-1 record. Phillippe is making his first start of the season for the Pirates. He's coming off a fine 20-13 season with a 2.84 ERA. 1900 was only Deacon's second season in professional baseball.
Jack Powell takes the hill for the Cardinals, and is hoping for better success than his first start of the season provided. Powell took the loss in the Cards opening day 3-2 decision against the Orphans of Chicago.

Cubs take their 2-1 record into Cincinnati to take on the 0-1 Reds. Jack Taylor will be making his 2nd start of the young 1901 season. In Taylor's first start, he went the distance in St. Louis, in a 3-2 Orphans win. He allowed 2 runs on only 7 hits in the victory. The 32-year old Phillips will be making his 1st start of the season for Cincinnati. He's coming off a disappointing 9-11 campaign in 1900, with a 4.28 ERA.

April 23rd

Dan McGann took Waddell deep twice in this one...both on 1-12 rolls and got the ballpark split (1-9). Meanwhile, the Pirates didn't notch their first hit off Jack Harper until the 8th inning when Claude Ritchey singled on a 1-7 split chance to break up the no-hitter!

Harper(1-0) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Pittsburg
hitters.  He surrendered only 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.  The
right-handed Harper lost his chance for a no-hitter when Claude Ritchey
singled with nobody out in the 8th inning.  St. Louis had only 4 hits for the
game.  
 
Rube Waddell(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He gave up just 3 runs and 4 hits
in 8 innings.  'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said
Harper. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure
and everything went well.'

The Philadelphia Phillies nipped the Boston Beaneaters in 10 innings 3 to 2 at
Baker Bowl in a hard fought contest.
 
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings.  Philadelphia came
out the victor in the 10th inning.  Jimmy Slagle drew a walk.  After an out
was recorded, Elmer Flick came to the plate and stroked a one-base hit.
Klondike Douglass then smacked a single resulting in a mighty exciting win
for Philadelphia and the 2,758 home town fans in attendance.  Philadelphia
had a total of 9 hits for the game.  
 
The victory was credited to Bill Duggleby(1-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Vic Willis(0-1) was given the loss.  He surrendered 3 runs and 9 hits
in 9 and 1/3 innings.
