Harry Howell went the distance at Oriole Park as the Baltimore Orioles beat
the Boston Americans by the count of 5 to 3.
 
Howell(1-0) pitched a solid game.  He went 9 innings allowing 12 hits and no
walks.  Boston threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.  
 
Cy Young(0-1) was given the loss.  'I had a little blister on my index finger
before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Howell said.  'I was lucky I
got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'

Pirates and Fred Clarke took it to the Cardinals early and often. Of course, in retrospect, all 11 runs that Powell allowed were UNEARNED!

Tommy Leach had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Jesse Tannehill went the distance as the
Pittsburg Pirates clobbered the outmatched St. Louis Cardinals, 13 to
2.
 
Leach had a big day at the plate.  He tripled scoring two baserunners in the
1st inning, stroked a base-hit in the 3rd inning, tripled plating a run in
the 5th inning and lined a single in the 7th inning.  Pittsburg had a total
of 19 hits for the game.  
 
Tannehill(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The loss was
charged to Jack Powell(0-2).  He was pinned with the loss despite not
allowing an earned run in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

Doc White allowed Bill Shettsline to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and Harry Wolverton had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the New York Giants by the score of 11 to 5 at Baker
Bowl.
 
Wolverton made sure the Philadelphia fans enjoyed themselves.  He slapped a
single bringing in a run in the 1st inning, ripped a base-knock knocking in a
run in the 5th inning, doubled plating three runs in the 6th inning and
doubled in the 8th inning.  New York had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.  
 
The winning pitcher was White(1-0) who allowed 5 runs for the game. Luther
Taylor(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 15 hits and 2 walks in 5 and
1/3 innings.  
 
When questioned about the loss, George Davis said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there this afternoon.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get it
done this time.  Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the
smiles.'

Jim Hughes delivered 9 solid innings as the Brooklyn Superbas beat the Boston
Beaneaters by a score of 3 to 1.
 
Brooklyn scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  That early scoring
held up.  The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was
able to score again.  
 
The victory was credited to Hughes(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.
Kid Nichols(1-1) was charged with the loss.  He allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in
8 innings.  
 
'Hughes just dominated us' losing pitcher Nichols said. 'Hopefully we can get
to him the next time around'

AL pitching matchups for 4-27-01

Win Mercer hopes to help the Washington club run their record to an early 2-0 against Wiley Piatt and the Athletics in today's game. Mercer will be beginning his 8th professional season at the ripe old age of 26. His 107-133 record to this point could definitely use some polishing. Piatt will get the start for Philadelphia. Wiley comes off three seasons pitching for the NL Philadelphia ballclub. He compiled a 56-39 record and if history is any indicator, he'll be a fine addition to the AL club's staff.

Milwaukee will attempt to shake off their most recent collapse at the hands of the Tigers. Bert Husting will get the starting nod, making his first professional start. He pitched twice in relief for Pittsburg last season, allowing 5 runs in 8 innings of work with no decisions. Despite questionable success to this point in his career, Joe Yeager will continue to pitch, this time for Detroit. Joe carries a 15-25 career record into this affair.

Cleveland hopes to build on their 2-0 start by sending Bill Hart to pitch for them against John Katoll and the White Sox. The 35-year old Hart is making a return to professional ball after being out the past two seasons. Hopefully he'll be more successful this time out as his career record coming into this season is 59-109. Katoll also didn't pitch in the 1900 season, having made four appearances for the Chicago NL team in 1898-99. Like Hart, he carries a less than desirable stat line into the season (1-2, 4.03).

Boston sends their venerable righthander, Cy Young to the mound today against Harry Howell and the Baltimore Orioles. Young just finished a two year stint with the Cardinals, going 19-19 with a 3.00 ERA in 1900. The 24-year old Howell is coming off a 6-5, 3.75 ERA with the Brooklyn club in 1900.

NL pitching matchups for 4-27-01

Jack Powell opposes Jesse Tannehill in a game between the 2-3 Cardinals and the 2-1 Pirates. Powell will make his 2nd start of the season, and hopes for a win after allowing only 2 earned runs and taking a loss his last time out. The 26-year old Tannehill is making his first start of the season. He's won 20+ in each of his last three seasons in Pittsburgh, and his next win will be the 80th of his young career.

Luther Taylor opposes Doc White as the Giants take on the Phillies. Both pitchers are hoping to put on better performances in their 2nd starts of the season. Although Taylor pitched pretty well, he was hung with the loss in a 3-2 decision versus Boston on 4-19. White in the meantime, didn't get a decision, but pitched very poorly, allowing 9 runs on 11 hits in only 3 innings of work versus Brooklyn on April 22nd.

Cincinnati takes their 1-2 record into Chicago to take on the 3-2 Orphans. Noodles Hahn makes his 2nd start of the season for the Reds. Hahn was roughed up pretty harshly by the Pirates back on April 20th. He allowed 9 runs (8 earned) on 13 hits in a 9-6 loss to Pittsburg. Mal Eason will be making his 2nd career start for Chicago. Eason pitched one game for Chicago in 1900, a win in which he allowed only 2 runs in 9 innings.

Boston (1-2) plays in Brooklyn against the undefeated Superbas (4-0). Kid Nichols, winner of the only Beaneater game thus far (4-19 vs NY) looks to improve his record to 2-0. Jim Hughes will be making his first start of the season for Brooklyn. Hughes will have a hard time exceeding or even duplicating his stellar 1900 campaign. Hughes was 28-6 with a 2.68 ERA.
