Beaneaters pick up free agent Elmer Smith
Boston was looking to add some depth to their present outfield situation, and that has led to the signing of Elmer Smith. The 33-year old Smith, a native of Pittsburgh (and released by his hometown club less than a week ago) had zero hits in five at bats for the Pirates.
Athletics searching for help at shortstop, sign Dolan
The Athletics have been searching for a solution at shortstop all season long. That search has led them to sign Joe Dolan, most recently of the NL Phillies. Dolan hit .238 in 42 at bats for the Phillies before being released on May 3rd. The search for the elusive shortstop had seen the most recent applicant, Harry Lochhead hit a mere .100 in 40 at bats.
