Giants gagged on this one. Not only did the Superbas come back, but when Doheny came on for the fatigued Mathewson in the 9th, he promptly gave up a 2-run game winning double. Giants rallied to load the bases, but a game ending DP took care of that. |

WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Deacon McGuire blocked the plate, saving a run!
In a great finish the Brooklyn Superbas came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the New York Giants by a score of 5 to 3 at Polo
Grounds.
Brooklyn came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Tom McCreery opened up the inning nicely
when he drew a walk. McCreery got a great jump and stole second easily. Tom
Daly then laced a single resulting in a run. After an out was recorded,
Deacon McGuire came up and he banged out a single. McGuire took second on
the throw. Duke Farrell stepped into the box and doubled as two more runners
crossed the plate. Brooklyn banged out 9 on the afternoon.
Wild Bill Donovan(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Brickyard
Kennedy earned his 1st save. Christy Mathewson(0-1) suffered the loss. He
gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Mathewson was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
