NL pitching matchups for 4-26-01

Doc Newton will be hoping to turnaround the Reds early 0-2 start by taking the hill today. Newton was 9-15, 4.14 in 1900, so it may be a stretch to count on him as their saviour. The Orphans respond with Long Tom Hughes. Hughes is making his 2nd start of the season, and was successful in his first outing. He got the win against St. Louis on April 20th, allowing only two runs in the process.

The Beaneaters of Boston continue their series in Philadelphia. Togie Pittinger had a poor rookie season in 1900. He compiled a 2-9 record with an ERA of 5.13. Philadelphia, struggling early with a 1-3 record will have Red Donahue on the mound. Donahue is hoping to follow up his solid 1900 season (15-10, 3.60) with a stronger year this time out.

Brooklyn takes their undefeated record across town to take on the Giants. Wild Bill Donovan gets his 2nd start of the season in this matchup. Donovan didn't get the decision in the Superbas opening day 9-8 win in Philadelphia. He went 9 innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 10 hits.

The Giants, after almost a week of inactivity play only their 2nd game of the season. The Giants have 20-year old Christy Mathewson slated to start. Mathewson was 0-3 with an ERA of 5.08 in limited activity during the 1900 season.
