Pitching Matchups for 4-28-01

In the only NL matchup of this day, Bill Phillips opposes Bert Cunningham as the Reds and Orphans play this afternoon. Phillips is coming off an awful performance his first time out this season. He took the loss against these same Orphans when he allowed 7 earned runs on 10 hits in only 7 innings of work. The 35-year old Cunningham begins his 2nd season with the Orphans. He sported a 4-3 record with an ERA of 4.36 in 8 apperances last season for Chicago.

Now the AL:

Milwaukee looks to avoid dropping their 4th straight to the Tigers of Detroit. The Brewers send Pete Dowling to the hill. Dowling brings a career 27-39 record with him from three seasons with Louisville in the National League. He did not pitch during the 1900 season. Current speculation has it that Pete preferred beverages that didn't help his pitching much. Detroit throws Ed Siever in response. Siever, a 26-year old from Goddard, KS will be making his professional debut.

Cleveland looks for it's first win of the season in Chicago vs the White Sox. The Blues send 22-year old rookie Charles "Bock" Baker to the mound. The White Sox will counter with player-manager Clark Griffith (pictured). Griffith has pitched the last eight seasons with the Chicago North side club. Last season he was 14-13, with a 3.05 ERA.
