Howell pitches and hits Orioles to victory
It's said often that a player single-handedly won a game. This was certainly the actual definition of that rule. Harry Howell shut down the Athletics on only 4 hits. In the meantime, he was 3 for 4 at the plate, including a solo home run in the 6th, and drove in 4 runs! Orioles run their record to 8-4 while Philadelphia drops to 4-9.

Harry Howell pitched 9 strong innings and he left the yard and had 4 RBI as
the Baltimore Orioles defeated the PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS 9 to 0 at Oriole
Park.
Howell provided much of the offense. He doubled which scored a run in the 2nd
inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 6th inning and doubled bringing
in two baserunners in the 8th inning. Offensively, Baltimore was a
juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Howell(3-1) was credited with the shutout. Bill Bernhard(1-2) was hit with the
loss. He was hit hard and gave up 14 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.
